This is a perfect opportunity for schools to explore the exciting prospects and potential risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to consider implementing a "safeguarding first" approach. Listed below are some helpful pointers and resources to assist you in empowering your pupils, staff, and parents:
Pupil AI Literacy
While AI can help transform education when implemented safely, the DfE’s recent product safety standards highlight that most current AI tools are non-compliant or fit for purpose when used directly with children. However, children are still likely to access AI when they are not at school. It is recommended to focus your efforts on upskilling them to understand what AI is, how best to use it, along with any ethical and safety considerations that are associated with AI.

Guidance: Please review the 2026 RSHE Guidance on incorporating AI safety principles.
Engaging Parents and Carers
It is helpful to everyone involved to maintain a consistent approach with AI. Therefore, it is recommended to consider how best to help parents remain vigilant and better understand the potential risks to help keep their children safe when they are not at school.

Staff Guidance
When implementing AI in schools, it is recommended to put in place robust policies and processes to safeguard everyone involved. TheDfE's Generative AI Standards state that schools should consider why and how their staff could use AI, and the impact it may have. For example, which platforms would be safest to use? How do you decide which tools to use? Who is responsible for the approval of their use? Have data protection considerations been made about what data is appropriate to input into any AI platform? Is there any practical support on how to use the new tools?
