How do you prepare for courageous conversations with parents about safeguarding?

We know from talking to DSLs, that talking to parents about safeguarding concerns can be challenging. To support you with this, we have devised a planning template to help you plan for these using a relational approach.

If you want to learn more about how to use this, please come along to our training.

Web filtering alert – Twitter (X) and Vimeo – use Embedded Content

Please be aware that unlike YouTube and Google, you cannot enforce safe search with X (previously Twitter) or Vimeo; what is more, X now also officially allows adult content!

We therefore advise extreme caution before allowing these sites in their entirety, especially for students as they may be exposed to highly inappropriate content

But don’t worry - remember that:

  1. you can not only have different policies for staff and students, but by linking SchoolProtect to your Windows (AD / Azure) or Chromebook directories, you can have different rules according to key stage or even year group (great for showing a risk-based approach to balance risk, safety and overblocking)!
  2. don’t worry, beyond simply blocking these sites for at least students, you can be more flexible and not overblock or break the sites you need.

How? Why not use our embedded content feature? This allows you, for example, to allow the X feed for your school which is embedded on your school website so it displays properly, or to allow Vimeo videos in a learning resource sites you use which uses Vimeo for its embedded videos. This can work for various video and social media sites.

We are looking at various ways to make your life easier and improve functionality, so do let us know what you would like to see next.

Did you know schools are required to have at least one governor/trustee trained in cyber security?

The DfE Cyber Security Standards for Schools and Colleges (referenced in KCSIE) were updated in May 2024 and within these, there is a section about staff training. This includes:

  • Staff
  • Pupils
  • Governors/Trustees

To help you, we have 2 courses that are FREE to ALL schools: one for staff based on the National Cyber Security Centre's training, and another for Governors/Trustees (first one on 25 June!).
