Elevate Cyersecurity Toolkit for School

The Elevate Cybersecurity Toolkit is here!

With regular headlines about schools falling victim to cybercrime, there is increasing pressure to ensure that governors and school leaders have appropriate controls in place to protect their school. With this in mind, LGfL has developed the Elevate Cybersecurity Toolkit for Schools.

The Toolkit is a collection of key documents that schools can use to elevate their cybersecurity. It can be used as a foundation for schools that want to attain Cyber Essentials Certification.

Better Passwords

Passwords are important, really important. But do you understand the terminology and best practice for their use? The NCSC has lots of guidance on how to setup and use passwords on their website. They have guidance for what makes a good password and information for system owners

Cyber Choices

Cyber Choices is a national programme led by the NCA (National Crime Agency) developed to assist in the fight against Cybercrime. Cyber Choices seek to intervene and educate people who may be vulnerable to becoming involved in cybercrime.

The Cyber Choices programme has four main aims:

1. Explain the difference between legal and illegal cyber activity
2. Encourage individuals to make informed choices in their use of technology
3. Deter and/or divert individuals from cyber crime
4. Promote legal and ethical cyber opportunities

Sophos have announced that they will no longer sell Sophos Endpoint Protection.

Endpoint Protection is being replaced with Intercept X and Intercept X Advanced for Server. For the majority of LGfL schools there will be no change. For those that have not already requested to upgrade to Intercept X Advanced at some point in the next 3-5 weeks they will automatically receive the newer antivirus solution. There will be no impact as a result of this. We do recommend that your technical teams turn on the newer features that will become available. Details about the change and how to turn on the new features can be found here.

If you're using the current version of Malwarebytes Incident Response, you should know that they have now ended support for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 while also freezing support for Windows XP.

Malwarebytes Incident Response running on Windows XP/Vista/Server 2008 will still function and receive protection updates, but they will not receive software updates. If you're still using computers that have Vista, XP or Server 2008 on them we highly recommend that you update or replace them as soon as you can.

The National Cyber Security Centre has produced three new videos that can be used to help raised understanding and awareness of cybersecurity.

Technical Tips

Now that summer IT projects are coming to an end, don't forget to ensure that all your servers have an appropriate backup in place.
