KCSIE 2023 is on the horizon, but you will want to see and share these insights into existing requirements:

  • Secondly, thousands of you have been using our KCSIE quizzes - check out the insights that will help you identify training gaps

Online searches of shortlisted staff

Keeping Children Safe in Education 2022 included a mention of online searches as part of the appointment process. But what is actually expected of schools? Not, as you will find out below, installing new social media apps and certainly not cyber-stalking potential new colleagues. See below the original KCSIE quote followed by a very helpful clarification from DfE about what it does and does NOT mean.

"KCSIE is not prescriptive in detailing the manner in which this check ['online search' in para. 221] is undertaken but care has been taken not to use the term 'social media' as this could be seen as invasive.

Our guidance requests that schools and colleges consider an 'online search'. This should be a quick and simple search, which can be conducted via an internet browser.

We do not wish to place any unnecessary burdens on schools and colleges, nor encourage them to breach any individual's private life."

What about KCSIE 2023?

We can expect to see KCSIE 2023 in draft form in the coming few weeks, but how are we doing with understanding and implementing the previous document?

Thousands of colleagues have been using our KCSIE Quizzes and the data is helping to show where there are gaps in knowledge. Such as the graphic here. In response, we have developed two new resources for you:

  • analysis for DSLs and SLT to explore and reflect upon
  • slides to incorporate into all-staff training

Download the slides from kcsiequiz.lgfl.net

Don't forget there's lots happening at LGfL beyond safeguarding, and join us at our next conference on June 30. More info/book
